With only subtle differences in design and color, here are a pair of prototype rings made for the Jay Berwanger Downtown Athletic Club Heisman Trophy winner. The ring with the black inlay is engraved "HJ-10K" on the inside, signifying the Herff Jones manufacturer and 10 karat gold material. The all-gold colored ring is unmarked but has been tested at 10K-12K gold. The rings originate from the estate of Mr. Robert Joseph Ilg, who had worked as the plant manager for ring manufacturer Herff Jones. Each ring weighs 38 grams and is size 10 and 10 1/2. The black inlay design was the one chosen to give to all former and current Heisman winners as these were developed in the late 80's, early 90's. The stones in the ring are diamond simulates as is customary with prototype rings. These are not cheap replica rings. These are the rings that were used by Herff Jones to show to the Heisman committee for approval.
